Don’t take the advice of people that don’t understand creativity

Dani has been singing singing at weddings and events from the age of 14.

Since 2020, after signing with MDC Music, Dani began to make a name for herself in the Toronto music scene by performing at various drive-in concerts, live-streamed performances, and a host of digital/live hybrid showcases during the pandemic.

We are super excited to bring this exclusive interview with Dani for our readers this month.

Please introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Dani Doucette, Pop Artist from Toronto ON.

Tell us about your education.
After graduation I got a business degree, then travelled the globe. I wanted to learn about other cultures and have always preferred the freedom of self-learning. I never liked school.

Share some of your childhood memories.
Music has always been a big part of my life. Growing up my father was always in bands and my brother Andre Doucette and I started writing together as kids. Honestly growing up with music has made life so much more fun. If we weren’t playing music, we were recreating music videos with a camcorder or building a fort in the woods. A lot of our childhood didn’t revolve around a TV, which I’m so thankful for.

How and when did you get interested in singing? What or who influenced you?
I always loved to sing. Whether it was at church or at school. Whenever a contest came around, I’d always enter. And when I was 14 my uncle asked me to join his cover band, Footloose. I started singing at weddings and events right after.

How would you best describe the type of your music?
I write stories. Lol. Pop Stories.

What inspires your music?
Well feels so obvious to say but just life experience and observing other people’s lives. There are always hints of personal truths in all of my songs. I also have a really active imagination and can pull narratives from thin air. I love storytelling.

What’s the inspiration behind your latest song?
I just released Call It, the music video. This song is about the desire to be felt heard in an argument, and waiting for the other person to make the first step forward to heal.

Who writes your music?
I write all of my own music.

What’s a typical creative and writing process like for you?
Always an emotional roller coaster.

And what’s next on the horizon for you?
With things opening, booking shows and preparing for them, also working on new music to release this summer.

What are some of your other hobbies?
I love running and walking long distances. I also enjoy designing my own clothes or just altering them.

What is your dream?
To inspire someone to achieve their dreams.

Where all have you performed so far? Which was your favorite?
I’ve recently performed at the El Mocambo, a legendary Toronto stage. A favorite memory though was opening for Serena Ryder and Bif Naked in North Bay.

Where would you dream to perform?
I would love to sell out Massey Hall.

What message do you want to convey through your music?
Honesty, happiness, elevated. I always want people to feel like I’m in reach.

What are your favorite hangout spots in Toronto?
I love hanging at The El Mocambo, also LoveChild Social House, Marbl, and Escobar.

How do you unwind?
More Walking. Lol. And a good sleep in.

What advice do you have for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?
Don’t take the advice of people that don’t understand creativity. People will always try to tear you down. There will be more Nos than Yes’s, so celebrate all of the little wins.
